Blake went to Les Gets for Crankworx and found himself riding a ot of wooden obstacles in the bike park, so where better to teach you how to ride such a variety of woodwork!
Step On - Step Off
Exactly like it sounds, jump onto the woodwork, then jump or drop off! The most important thing is not to go too slow in to this feature! If you go too slow, you won't make the gap up to the platform. use your bunnyhop technique to hop on to the wood. Inspect the feature on foot first if you're worried about size, height or distance.
The skills required for riding flat drops are super basic and stay the same no matter how big the drop gets! Roll up to it, lean back just before take off to allow the front wheel to rise up before dropping the whole bike off the drop and aiming to match the angle of the landing with both wheels. Use your body and bike to absorb the impact of the landing
A different more advanced obstacle that requires you to be comfortable with the bike stepping sideways on you slightly. As you round the corner on the obstacle, lean back to complete the dropping motion. At this point you must allow your bike to do what it will, don't fight it or stiffen up! Control the movements of the bike with your body and bring it to a landing position, again trying to match the angles with your wheels and absorbing the impact with bike and body.
A newer obstacle found mostly on slopestyle courses also known as a canon. Imagine a jump but without a lip to generate boost. Boner logs often need to be hit with a good amount of speed in order to compensate for the lack of lip. Compress in to the take off and jump it almost like you would for a bunny hop. Be careful of allowing the front end of the bike to rise too much, you're travelling at speed so really want to and both wheels together. If you land rear wheel heavy you'll be out the back door!
And that's all there is to it! Lets us know in the comments if you're still struggling with wooden bike park style jump features an we'll try to help you out further 👍
