Making minor changes to your home, such as replacing door hardware, can freshen up your home’s appearance. Although doorknobs come in a variety of finishes and shapes, replacing a doorknob with a door lever can change the look of your door dramatically. It also can add a touch of elegance to the door that the typical knob cannot. A door lever is installed in much the same way as a doorknob, but you must know whether you need a left-handed or right-handed lever and the length of your backset before installing it.
Remove the screws holding the existing doorknob in your door. The screws usually are located on the cover plate behind the handle. Some doorknobs have hidden screws. To access hidden screws, insert a narrow-blade flathead screwdriver into the small slot located on the doorknob shaft between the handle and the plate. Pull the handle off the shaft, then pull the cover plate off the shaft.
Pull the two sides of the doorknob from the door. Remove the two screws from the latch plate on the edge of the door. Pull the latch assembly from the door.
Measure the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the doorknob opening. This gives you the backset measurement. The backset measurement tells you the length of the latch you need to fit your door. Some door levers have adjustable latches to fit practically any door, while others have fixed latches. The manufacturer will provide this information on the package.
Stand outside the room for your door. For example, if you are installing a bath or bedroom door lever, stand outside the room with the door shut. Look for the door hinges, and select a lever in which the handle points toward the hinges. If the hinges are on your right, you need a right-handed lever. If the hinges are on your left, you need a left-handed lever. Some door levers are reversible for either right-handed or left-handed installations. Check the door lever packaging for this information.
Insert the latch from your door lever into the latch hole in your door. Ensure the slant of the latch faces the way the door closes. Make sure you adjust the latch, if necessary, to fit the backset measurement. This usually only requires pulling on the back of the latch to extend the length.
Place the two machine screws that came with the door lever into the latch plate. Tighten the screws in the latch plate to secure the latch in the door.
Install the interior side of the door lever into the doorknob hole and through the openings in the latch. The interior side of the door lever has the thumb lock in the center of the lever, the center spindle and the two threaded posts to hold the door lever screws.
Insert the exterior side of the door lever onto the door. The spindle from the interior side of the lever is inserted into the opening in the center of the exterior side of the lever.
Line up the screw holes on the exterior cover plate with the threaded posts attached to the interior lever. Insert the screws that came with the door lever through the cover plate and into the threaded posts. Tighten the screws to secure the new door lever in your door.
