How To Grow Peanuts Indoors from Seeds (Ottawa City, Ontario, Canada). Starting your Peanut Plants from Seeds (Indoors) :
Starting your Peanut Plants:
1. Get your peanut seeds (raw) from reliable dealer (OSC seeds has good reputation here in Ontario Canada).
1a. I manage to find some at Chinatown, (raw peanuts), but it can get tricky to find the seeds which are mature enough for planting. So, if you are new gardener, and having difficulty determining which is a mature peanut seeds, order from your seed dealer.
Gather your sterile seed planting medium
I prefer peat pellets (see picture-less messy), plus guaranteed sterile. Pour some water, let it expand, then put your peanut seeds in the middle of the pellet. Does not matter which way is up, it will germinate.
NOTE: peanut is tropical, so it needs lot of ligth and heat. High germination rate at 90% requires minimum 6 hours light, and heat mat on.
I tried no heat mat, and just light, germination rate is about 50%.
Some gardeners use indoor seed soil, that is fine.
Step 3. Within one week, depending on your luck, the seeds will sprout.
Keep the heat mat on, and 6 hours of light. By about 2 weeks, transfer to a bigger pot, or in your garden depending on daily temperature.
Make sure it is already warm, it is always around mid-June here in Ottawa, ON, Canada.
Note: Peanut like to get dry between watering. Daily watering is not a good idea, unless its really really hot in July around 40C.
Soil mix is 50% garden soil and 50% compost. No fertilizer was added in my peanuts.
4. Watch it grow and make sure it gets lots of sun. Step 4. Watch them grow. Notice the
yellow flowers, after it is pollinated, add 1-2 inches of soil at the base of
the plant for the roots to set in and form your ground nuts. When frost get to them, harvest your peanuts.
Good Luck! Angelina
